Saturday Portfolio Class

Project Open Door's Portfolio sequence of classes are free and open by application and interview to teens attending any public or charter high school in a Rhode Island urban core city - Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, or Woonsocket. Classes take place on Saturday mornings (9:00am-12:00pm) and are taught by college faculty, supported by RISD undergraduate teaching assistants. The classes are designed for teens interested in going to college after high school and who are interested in expanding their artistic abilities and their knowledge about art and design.

Portfolio is Project Open Door's foundations class for 9th- 11th graders where the focus is on the development of teens' drawing skills, and especially drawing from observation. Additionally students explore aspects of printmaking, mixed media, and construction in three-dimensions. Teens in this class begin to develop their portfolios to complement their school-based work and begin to research and explore college and and career opportunities in art and design fields.

In addition to Saturday morning classes, Portfolio teens also have access to Open Studios at RISD, which are scheduled on weekday afternoons from 3:00pm-5:00pm.  Our teens are provided RISD IDs, which enable them to travel to and from RISD at no cost using a Rhode Island Public Transport (RIPTA) bus; further, the ID gives teens free access to the RISD Museum of Art as well as RISD's Fleet Library. In addition to Saturday classes and Open Studios, Project Open Door's Portfolio teens have opportunities to make college visits, attend National Portfolio Day in Boston, and make museum and gallery visits, including an annual visit to New York. Project Open Door also provides its teens with the opportunity to participate in week-long summer intensive studios.
