TRANSFORMING THE EVERYDAY

CONCEPT: An artist can find inspiration for a work of art in even the most familiar of everyday objects

THE ASSIGNMENT: Styrofoam Cup Sculpture

Clara Lieu, Instructor, POD Senior Portfolio

Starting with a single styrofoam cup, students were asked to dramatically alter the cup's form to the point that cup was unrecognizable as a cup!  While challenged to create a new form just from a single cup, students could, if they wished, use additional cups in the creation of their sculptures.

STUDENT WORK

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

In evaluating a student's sculpture, the instructor was looking for evidence of transformation in the work. The careful dissection of the cup(s) results in an engaging and visually coherent form that is convincing from all points of view. Obvious care in cutting the styrofoam contributes to the sculpture's effectiveness as a newly invented form.
